negative space

what if we saw in absences instead of presences?
what if the air we move in every day was filled to overflowing with shapes and arabesques in visible light, and we cared less about solidity --so much less, in fact, that solid objects ceased to appear in our vision as anything but shadowless, transparent holes in the wonder-- and more about the breath, the nebulous, the constant change?
what if we looked at a room, and noticed lack? we could tell what had been there --maybe a chair, a person, a portrait-- and then we could sense what it had been when it wasn't a room -- a forest, a lake? we could see ghosts of the past in the emptiness between the decreasing solidity of the wall and the couch. and what if we could see possibilities, not just in our mind's eye but plain, whirling, glaring in front of us like a sun? we could see the future of a room in millions of shapes and shadows -- enumerating every possible path in glittering layers that we could spend awe-filled hours, days, years rifling through. imagination made concrete.
and then what of people? what if we could detect the invisible silences within each other like we were so many x-rays? the vacuum of loss, or worse, the emptiness of never having had? the bitterest disappointments, the most hidden longings, all would blossom before our eyes like parasitic shadows in deeply-bored holes. the sight would be depressing: the cancerous sadness now made visible would flow from the wounded and spread ankle-deep across the floor -- a bog-like mist we would slog through with ever-slowing, depressed steps caused by our mere awareness of its existence.
but maybe, if we knew the shape of those holes, we could also find a way to fill them for each other, before the darkness infects?
i like to think so.
