the anatomy of a tsunami

i watched the news again at my grandma's house today.
man rescued nine miles from shore.
woman searching for her lost son.
doctors, nurses, and patients marooned at a hospital, writing "SOS" in white sheets on the roof.
couple waiting in line to buy diapers and milk for their 1-year-old daughter at a grocery store.
tiny village on an offshore island reduced to matchsticks at the foot of an otherwise picturesque valley.
little boy being screened for radiation exposure.

when we talk about these kinds of disasters in the thousands and tens of thousands and hundreds of thousands of casualties, and in the thousands and millions and billions of dollars in damages, i wonder that we don't do it to numb ourselves in cold numbers, like an icepack of statistics.
but i wonder how many millions of new, individual stories there are in japan now, a vast volume of grief none but the tellers can understand.
