walkabout; or, flaming caramel?; or, trekkin' on down the street; etc.

what?
what were we thinking?
what would have possessed us to walk six hours to spend twenty minutes in a natural hot spring?
but i think the more important question is,
why did we enjoy it so much?
mind you, there was plenty of snow.
four pairs of feet (mine included) were very improperly shod. (i wasn't... optimistic enough to wear flip flops like two other pairs, but wearing my year-old walmart canvas shoes without socks wasn't a very realistic choice either.)
and this was no two-mile hike made impossibly long by intervals of rest.
nor were we very dry at all on the journey back to the car.
but for some inexplicable reason, walking countless miles guided only by the (breathtakingly clear) stars and three (not so breathtakingly clear) old flashlights in below-freezing temperatures for over six hours, not counting the two spent driving and the twenty minutes of bliss spent in the hot springs -- for some reason, all of that was incredibly fun.
it's the same thing with the st. george trip i so disloyally forgot to fill you folks in on. why, when we could have easily spent the night at one of a few friends' or family's houses in the greater st. george area, did we choose to spend $4 apiece to camp up a nearby canyon without sleeping pads under threat of snow in february?
for the memories.
and even though in both circumstances we were freezing cold, exhausted, sleepless, smelly, and miserable at the time, we still laughed and made jokes and created some of the most hilarious (and dare i say precious?) memories yet.
so that's why even though i still walk with a slight limp in my right leg, i can just smile when people ask me about it and say, "my friends and i are idiots."
