i went to sleep last night in absolute dread for today. i had to finish a book for new testament and write a paper on it, edit my short story for creative writing and give a copy to each member of my critique group, take a mandatory constellation quiz for astronomy, go to class, and come home to alpine.
all today. and i was very not ready when i went to sleep last night.
the day didn't start off well, i must admit. you know. sleeping through my alarm and my first two classes. go, me. and so, staring up at my ceiling, wondering how mind-fraying the day would be, i picked up the book i was to read for new testament (The Infinite Atonement by Tad R. Callister) and let me tell you, gospel scholarship is certainly the right way to start the day, i suppose. because i found time slipping by so deliciously slowly, after i got up.
and the sky was blue.
and the grass was vividly green.
and there were little velvet buds on almost all the trees.
and i wore shorts and a t-shirt.
and i edited my story in a courtyard by a fountain.
and, most miraculous of all: i actually was somewhat satisfied by my edits, and had enough time to print three copies off and get to class on time.
that. never. happens.
but aside from all the other tiny things that made my day wonderful that would probably just bore you if i were to relate them all, i have to tell you one thing that truly made. my. day.
in creative writing, my teacher announced that she had a wonderful surprise for us. (yes, those were her exact words. "wonderful surprise." i love that woman.) after she got the projector to function, she pulled up a powerpoint and said, "today, we're going to be looking at a slideshow of our class."
nervous exclamations ensued. my teacher deftly hushed them.
"i want you to guess what image represents which person in our class," she said, and clicked the "next slide" button.
what followed was an hour i'll likely never forget.
she had compiled a slideshow of paintings, photography, posters, celebrities, and characters from popular television shows, each of which was supposed to represent one student in the class. and we were charged with the task of guessing which belonged with which, defending our choice, and then hearing our lovely teacher's analysis of each picture and why it represented the particular person.
i won't go through what everyone was matched up with, obviously, but i can tell you're ALL wondering which one i would get. see, i don't talk much in that class, or in any of the classes i'm in. i never really have. so i was curious how my teacher saw me. she flicked through the pictures and one by one we eliminated nearly everyone in the class. she punched a button and a beautiful, red and yellow painting came up, all jagged, curved brightness, and i instantly knew it as Matisse. inside i was hoping hoping hoping it was me, because i think Matisse a genius, and i really loved the painting, in that i-don't-know-why-but-i-do,-okay?-way so characteristic to art. while the class debated, my only friend-acquaintance in that class tapped my desk with a paper he'd been holding and said "i think it's you, i think this one's you."
well unfortunately, it didn't end up being me. but anytime i see that painting now, i'm sure i'll remember that friend and how someone once thought i was a Matisse painting.
(and in case you're wondering, I was a photo of Kensington Gardens in England. at that point, my professor was in a hurry to finish by the bell, so she said "it's Lindsey, because she's so incredibly talented, and because everything is just so planned out so beautifully in her head.." and i wanted to say "ha! if only you knew. and also, aside from the planning-out thing, how does that make me kensington gardens?? though, don't worry, i'm happy with the choice.")
