i'm still shivering.
me and my friends decided to climb mountains and build a bonfire in the wilderness amongst the skinwalkers and ice. easier said than done when you forget matches, scarves, lighter fluid, a knife, and other necessities. not to worry, though, we brought THREE BAGS of marshmallows for eight people. we considered ourselves relatively well-prepared.
the consequences?
we were stranded next to an icy river in the darkness with a waning flashlight, three matches (soon to be accidentally spilled by me and lost forever to the untamed wild) a temperamental lighter, a huge pile of wood but no kindling, and my cold allergy.
it doesn't sound fun, does it? however, after a half-hour or so filled with shivering, splinters, and indelicate language, we finally sat down to a roaring fire and gorged ourselves on blackened marshmallows that tasted incredibly like the branches we used to roast them. my swelling went down, and we all got a little warmer. scary stories were attempted, and failed. smoke was inhaled, and cursed. firebending was alluded to, and used. monsters were kept at bay by that element that gave man power, and i fancy they even sat down in the shadows to listen to our bantering with curiosity. eventually, it had to end. the men stayed to put out the fire with what tools nature had endowed them with, and we women stood at the head of the trail and sang christmas songs to whatever mountain lion or mountain man was listening.
though both a knife and lighter were forgotten and we had to traverse the treacherous track six times before finally being able to make it to our well-heated homes, even through the cold and the hiking, i enjoyed myself. i had made plans earlier today which didn't work out, and i wrote this day off before it finished as being a dud. how incredibly expectations can be proven wrong.
happy thanksgiving tomorrow, all.
