day 3: your parents.

ha. they leave it open to interpret that however you want.
i like that.
my parents are great. i was about to type "but aren't everyone's?" until i realized that, no, not everyone's parents are great. in fact, i don't think a lot of parents are great. how did i get so lucky? what did i do to deserve great parents? certainly not appreciate them, nor behave, nor do anything to even begin to pay back their greatness. no, i was not (and still am not) a great daughter, but then you always knew i would realize that and offer the accompanying apology one day, didn't you mom? haha. do you want to know something though? i always knew that i wasn't a great daughter. but the fact that you left the expectancy of any apology hanging out there in the air, handing it over to "someday" kind of let me off the hook. you know, the whole "procrastinate the day of your repentance" thing. but now that i'm out on my own and experiencing things i truly did anticipate, as well as some things i didn't, i can now apologize and feel like it was nicely timed. after all, you usually appended the "someday" with a phrase like "when you have your own children" or "when you have to wash your own laundry/dishes/counters/etc.," and now that i've reached that age, i feel like i've gotten the cue, my line's coming up: "i'm sorry, parents." delivered with a little less gusto and a little more fanfare than i'm sure you hoped, but with as much heart as ever.
i feel if i were to do some vague outline of their achievements/personal qualities/physical appearances/quirky habits it would end up being one of these. and even if i were to do that, you still wouldn't have a clue who they really were. besides, it feels a little insincere to enumerate their positive attributes over something as lame and artificial as a blog. meet them yourself, find out how awesome they are on your own.
because they really are incredible, and i'm beyond blessed to have them as my parents.

  1. I'm sure that you thought I would have by now called you and commented on how thoughtful and wonderful you are to say such things about us. I would have . . . if I had read it before now. Somehow, it was filed as a past-post, and I just barely read it! So, thank you. You are sweet to say those things--made me feel great (even though I don't always feel like such a great parent!) Love you. Mom
